Coilguns + Why Bother? + Dule Tree – June 15 at Drizzly Grizzly!

Coilguns

Coilguns was formed in 2011 by musicians previously associated with The Ocean, who aimed to create simpler and more energetic music with this new project. Their sound blends elements of post-hardcore, noise rock, and even math rock, with chaotic yet sometimes irresistibly catchy riffs. Combined with polyrhythmic drumming, this creates an overwhelming force that is even more powerful live.

Last year, they released the outstanding album Odd Love, which they’ve already promoted at festivals such as Soulcrusher and Belgium’s Desertfest. They’re not slowing down this year either—Coilguns will perform their latest album in full at Roadburn in the Netherlands, hit ArcTanGent in August, and make a stop in our country somewhere in between.

Why Bother?

Why Bother? is a project founded by Bartosz “Boro” Borowski (Lonker See, B3-33), Maciej Szkudlarek (Lastryko, Logophonic), and Łukasz Kumański (Me and That Man, Mulk). The band slowly took shape during the pandemic until the outbreak of the Women’s Strike in late October 2020, which gave them the final push to take action. The entire composing and recording process took just two days, resulting in a sound that blends noise rock, punk, and psychedelia.

Their debut album was released in spring 2021 via the legendary Antenna Krzyku, featuring guest vocalists on every track. Since then, the band has added a permanent vocalist, Rafał Jurewicz, recorded their second album, and toured across Poland. Now, Why Bother? is promoting their split release with Dule Tree, which came out on September 11, 2023.

Dule Tree

*”Personally, I love musical experiments and unconventional genre blends. However, at Dule Tree’s concert, I felt like I was witnessing a chaotic rehearsal where musicians blindly tested the sound of a dozen instruments at once. The result seemed overwhelmingly overcomplicated and lacked cohesion. I understand that this was likely intentional, but at times, it felt as though the performance had spiraled out of the band’s control.

Each musician played their own way, and while certain moments had a mesmerizing quality, they quickly dissolved into an unstructured cacophony. The band prioritized incorporating as many different sounds as possible without ensuring a sense of controlled chaos. The result? An unbearable sonic mixture that felt far from stage-ready. The only thing that came to mind was a quote from Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket: ‘You’re so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece!’

I’d like to believe I was the only one who didn’t understand what Dule Tree was aiming for, but judging by the lukewarm reaction of the dwindling audience, I’m not so sure.”*
